Rachel Hawthorne, que también ha firmado libros bajo el nombre de Lorraine Heath y Jade Parker, es hija de una reina de belleza inglesa y un ex militar texano. Cuando se licenció en Psicología, no se podía imaginar que su carrera la ayudaría más tarde a crear personajes tan creíbles que parecen reales. Este es solo uno de los talentos de una autora que escribe tanto para adolescentes como para el público adulto, en ambos casos con un notable éxito, abalado por los numerosos premios con los que ha sido galardonada en los últimos años, como el RITA, el HOLT, el Romantic Times y el Texas Gold, entre otros. Para empezar, ¿podrías contarnos un poco más sobre vos? ¿Cuándo empezaste a escribir y de dónde nació tu pasión por la escritura? To start, could you tell us something about you? When did you started writing and where did the passion on writing come from?
Siempre he sido una escritora. Recuerdo haber empezado a escribir mi primer historia cuando tenía siete años. Se trataba de un hombre que se enamoró de una sirena. La pasión por la escritura siempre ha estado conmigo. Siempre me ha gustado contar historias.
I have always been a writer. I can remember starting to write my first story when I was seven. It was about a man who fell in love with a mermaid. The passion for writing has always been with me. I have always loved telling stories.
¿Cómo recordás que eran tus primeros escritos? ¿Qué edad tenías? How do you remember it were your first writings? How old were you?
Tenía siete años. Recuerdo estar sentada en una mecedora con un atril con una cubierta de color rojo y escribir la historia.
I was seven. I remember sitting in a rocking chair with a writing tablet with a red cover and writing the story.
Mi primera novela publicada como Rachel Hawthorne fue "London: Kit y Robin" en el año 2000. Desde 1994 había estado publicando como Lorraine Heath, así que para el 2000 ya estaba bastante cómoda con el proceso de escritura. Me tomó cerca de 3 meses escribir el libro. Ya estaba contratada para escribirla, así que el proceso de publicación consistió en terminarlo y enviarlo a mi editor.
My first novel published as Rachel Hawthorne was “London: Kit and Robin” in 2000. Since 1994, I had been publishing as Lorraine Heath so by 2000 I was fairly comfortable with the writing process. It took me about 3 months to write the book. I was already contracted to write it so the publication process involved finishing it and sending it to my editor.
Tienes un montón de novelas publicadas ya, ¿cómo te inspiras para empezar a escribir cada nueva historia? You have a lot of novels published already, how do you inspire to start writing a new story?
Para mí los personajes son la parte más importante. Tengo que amarlos y querer contar su historia. Además, tengo que querer compartir sus historias con los lectores y tengo que creer que los lectores disfrutarán las historias. Los lectores son tan importantes. Quiero asegurarme de que no los defraudaré.
For me the characters are the most important part. I have to love them and want to tell their story. In addition, I have to want to share their stories with the readers and have to believe that the readers will enjoy the stories. Readers are so very important. I want to make sure that I don’t disappoint them.
¿Hay alguna de tus novelas o series de la cual puedas decir que disfrutaste más escribir? Y si es así, ¿cuál y por qué? Is there any of your novels or series that you could say you enjoyed most writing? If so, which one and why?
Cada historia es especial en su trayecto. Es como tener hijos. Es posible que los amemos a todos de manera diferente, pero aún los amamos a todos por igual. Dicho esto, tuve un montón de diversión con la serie Guardianes Oscuros porque es completamente diferente a las historias que había escrito hasta el momento.
Every story is special in its one way. It’s like having children. We may love them all differently but we still love them all the same. That said, I had a lot of fun with the Dark Guardian series because it was so different from the stories I had written before then.
Vi un especial en televisión sobre el Parque Nacional Glacier. Tienen un programa de verano "Sherpa", en el que contratan a jóvenes universitarios para trabajar como guías en la selva. Mi marido pensó que sería un buen escenario para una novela para jóvenes adultos, pero no pude ver la historia. Un día, mi editor me preguntó si tenía alguna idea para escribir una historia paranormal y pensé: "Hmmm. ¿Qué pasaría si los sherpas fuesen hombres lobo protegiendo su sociedad escondida en la selva?” A mi editor le gustó la idea, y así fue como nació la serie. Había planeado escribir sólo un libro, pero ella quería tres, así que agregué a los científicos tratando de capturar los Mandos y dejando que esa parte de la historia cubriera los tres libros.
I watched a special on TV about Glacier National Park. They have a summer “Sherpa” program where they hire young college students to work as guides in the forest. My husband thought that it would make a good setting for a young adult novel but I couldn’t quite see the story. One day my editor asked if I had any paranormal story ideas and I thought, “Hmmm. What if the Sherpas were werewolves protecting their hidden society inside the forest.” My editor liked the idea, and that’s how the series was born. I had only planned to write one book, but she wanted three so I added the scientists trying to capture the Shifters and let that part of the story cover all three books.

I’ve heard that the series had been optioned for the TV, isn’t it? Could you share with us anything about this? How do you feel about having people of bones and flesh interpreting the characters you had built in your mind?
La serie ha sido opcionada para la televisión. En este punto, eso significa que tenemos un productor que espera transformar Guardianes Ocultos en una serie de televisión, pero hay un montón de cosas que tienen que caer en su lugar para que eso suceda. The series has been optioned for TV. At this point, that means that we have a producer who hopes to transform the Dark Guardians into a TV series but there are a lot of things that have to fall into place for that to happen. I think it will be exciting to see how my stories are adapted for TV. I understand that the characters may not look as I envisioned them and that the stories may even change some but I think it will be fun.
¿Va a haber un quinto libro en la saga Guardianes Ocultos? Is there going to be a 5th book in the Dark Guardian’s series?

At this point, unfortunately, my publisher has no plans for a 5th book in the Dark Guardian series. While I may have an idea that I would like to write, the publisher has to want to release it as a book for it to be made into a book.
Estás en lo cierto. Luna llena es la historia de Lindsay, Connor y Rafa. Porque yo siempre he escrito novelas románticas en las que cada libro incluye un héroe y la heroína, no se me ocurrió que cada libro de la serie debía ser sobre Kayla y Lucas. Quería contarles tres historias de amor diferentes (y más tarde cuatro, cuando el editor quería Shadow of the Moon). Kayla y Lucas sí aparecen en las otras historias pero simplemente no son el centro de ellas.
You are correct. Full Moon is the story of Lindsay, Connor and Rafe. Because I have always written romance novels in which each book involves one hero and heroine, it did not occur to me that each book in the series should be about Kayla and Lucas. I wanted to tell three different romance stories (and later four, when the publisher wanted Shadow of the Moon). Kayla and Lucas do appear in the other stories they are just not the focus of the other stories.

Escribe lo que te gusta leer. Lee mucho. La lectura es la mejor manera de aprender a escribir, ya que comienzas a notar cómo otros escritores plasman las emociones o describen personajes y te ayuda a aprender como hacerlo.
Write what you love to read. Read a lot. Reading is the best way to learn how to write because you begin to notice how other writers bring out emotion or describe characters and it helps you learn how to do it.
¿Qué pensás acerca de las modas en la literatura juvenil? ¿Creés que nacen porque los editores comenzar a comprar más obras del mismo género del último best seller o porque los jóvenes realmente quieren más de lo mismo? What do you think about the trends on YA literature? Do you think they born because the publishers start buying more of the genre of the last best seller or because the teens really want more of the same?
Esa es una pregunta excelente. No estoy realmente segura de cuál es la respuesta. Yo sé que todos quieren estar publicando lo que los jóvenes están leyendo. Cómo aprovechar las tendencias sin sobresaturar el mercado con el mismo tipo de historias es un desafío.
That is an excellent question. I’m not really sure what the answer is. I do know everyone wants to be publishing what young people are reading. How to tap into the trends without oversaturating the market with the same kind of stories is a challenge
